Virginia State University
Petersburg, Virginia

Summary
This new student housing development at Virginia State University is designed to complement the campus’s historic character while introducing contemporary elements that reflect the evolving needs of today’s students. The four-story, Type II-B precast concrete building provides 426 beds across 123 units and will be delivered through a design/build partnership. The design draws from the university’s predominantly restrained Georgia Revival style—characterized by red brick facades, symmetrical forms, and classical detailing—to ensure a cohesive visual connection with the surrounding campus. Modern touches, such as prominent glass corners and clean lines, introduce transparency and lightness, reinforcing the building’s role as a forward-looking living-learning environment. Together, the architecture and interior spaces support student success, promote community, and honor the university’s past while embracing its future.
